CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In what was the first Monday game for the Crimson since January of 2006, No. 7/6 Harvard (19-7-1, 14-5-1 ECAC Hockey) played St. Lawrence (14-11-7, 10-6-4 ECAC Hockey) to a 3-3 tie at Bright-Landry Hockey Center, splitting three points in the team's final home game of the 2021-22 regular season.
Harvard outshot the Saints by a 53-23 margin, including an 8-1 spread in the overtime period, but was unable to find a game-winning goal despite several close calls.
First-years
Paige Lester and
Mia Biotti joined
Anne Bloomer as goal scorers for the Crimson, while
Becca Gilmore had assists on all three Harvard goals.
The teams played a scoreless opening 20 minutes relatively free of whistles. The period's only penalty was called at 15:14 when Harvard first-year
Jenna MacDonald was booked for interference, putting the Saints on the power-play. The best chance in the ensuing two minutes came for Harvard, however. A clearance from defender
Emma Buckles glanced off a St. Lawrence skater, springing
Anne Bloomer on a breakaway. Bloomer made a move to her backhand side but was unable to get the shot away in tight on Saints goalie Lucy Morgan.
The game remained without a goal for more than 11 minutes in the second period before
Paige Lester scored her third of the season at 11:02.
Becca Gilmore took a pass from
Jenna MacDonald along the left side of the boards and spun her way around a Saints' defender toward goal. The puck was jarred loose amidst the turn but found its way to the stick of the left-handed Lester, who rifled a forehand past Morgan on the glove side to make it 1-0.
St. Lawrence drew even at 13:34 on a goal from first-year standout, Abby Hustler, before taking its first lead of the game with a power-play strike on a redirection by Brittney Gout at 19:26 in the second.
Harvard was able to convert on its own power-play less than three minutes into the third to tie matters once again. An initial shot by Gilmore deflected off
Taze Thompson in the crease right to Bloomer's forehand with plenty of net to fire at. The junior pounced on the opportunity for what was her 19th goal of the season, knotting the score at two.
The Crimson retook the lead at 6:47 in the third on clinical passing play. First, Gilmore gained the zone on the right wing and left the puck for
Kristin Della Rovere. The center then proceeded to find a trailing
Mia Biotti, who walked in and ripped a wrist-shot under the netminder's glove, bringing the tally to 3-2 in favor of the home team.
St. Lawrence was able to equalize again at 10:38 on another goal from its senior center, Gout. A mere 20 seconds later, it seemed as if Harvard had grabbed the lead right back after a point shot from
Jenna MacDonald was jammed at by
Brooke Jovanovich at the left side of the net, resulting in the puck deflected off Morgan's skate and into the Saints' goal. After an official review, however, it was decided that the play had been blown dead prior to the puck crossing the goal line and the score stayed level at three. Nothing had changed by the time the third-period horn sounded and the teams headed for overtime.
The Crimson put consistent pressure on the Saints in the three-on-three, spraying eight-shots on net to St. Lawrence's one. Harvard could not, however, solve St. Lawrence's Morgan, who was up to the task in the cage and was able to preserve a tie for the visitors.
