SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year forward
Matthew Coronato had a goal and an assist, and junior defenseman
Ryan Siedem added two assists, but Harvard men's ice hockey (15-9-3, 12-6-2 ECAC Hockey) fell 5-3 at Union (11-17-4, 8-11-2 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Feb. 25).
First-year forward
Alex Gaffney and junior forward
Baker Shore added goals for Harvard, which outshot Union 40-26 on the night, but found themselves behind early and chasing the game.
The Dutchmen scored at 8:35 of the first period, but Gaffney responded for Harvard on a breakaway. Siedem made a beautiful seam pass up the middle to Gaffney, catching Union on a slow line change, and Gaffney beat Union goaltender Connor Murphy (37 saves) between the pads at 15:08 to make it 1-1.
A power play goal for Union at 7:00 of the second period put the home team up again heading to the third.
Just :23 into the final frame, Coronato poked in a rebound to tie the game once again at 2-2. Two quick goals for Union put the game firmly in their control, as Owen Farris (5:42) and Collin Graf (7:18) made it 4-2 in the third.
Another great pass by Siedem found the stick of Shore alone in front for a tip-in goal at 11:04 to make it a one-goal game in the late stages.
But Union's empty-net goal with 1:11 to play ended Harvard's comeback hopes.
