Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Uses First Period Surge To Earn 5-1 Road Win at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – First year forward Zakary Karpa had a goal and an assist, and junior defenseman Henry Thrun added two goals to lead Harvard men's ice hockey (16-9-3, 13-6-2 ECAC Hockey) to a 5-1 win at Rensselaer (15-20-3, 10-12-0 ECAC Hockey) on Saturday night (Feb. 26) at Houston Field House.

Sophomore goaltender Derek Mullahy made 24 saves to earn the win in net.

First-year forward Matthew Coronato and junior captain Nick Abruzzese added first period goals for Harvard which got off to a flying start in first 20 minutes, scoring four for its best start since a five-goal opening period against Bentley on Oct. 30. Coronato got things started for the Crimson carrying the puck in on an early 2-on-1, toe-dragging around an RPI defender and firing a wrist shot by Linden Marshall at 8:16.

Then just two minutes later, on another odd-man rush, sophomore Alex Laferriere found Thrun alone in front and he hit the top corner at 10:13 to give the Crimson a two-goal lead.

The onslaught continued as Karpa carried in the puck on another 2-on-1 rush and found the top corner on the far side at 14:12 to make it 3-0.

The Crimson converted on their first power play chance of the game late in the frame, as Abruzzese's one-timer off a feed from Laferriere at 19:16 gave Harvard a four goal edge at the break.

With Harvard on the power play early in the second period, Thrun scored his second of the night at 5:35, finding the open net on a wide-angle rebound to make it 5-0.

Mullahy helped Harvard close out the game from there, his lone blemish Ture Linden's goal at 4:08 of the third period.
