Softball Cruises Past Stetson at Hatter Classic, 9-1

DELAND, Fla. – Harvard closed out its season-opening day on Friday with a 9-1 five-inning victory over Stetson at the Hatter Classic. The Crimson, which defeated Rhode Island earlier in the day, improved to 2-0 on the year, while Stetson fell to 7-5.

Lauren Bobowski broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with a two-out RBI single that scored Allison O'Heany. Harvard kept the pressure on the Hatters in a decisive third inning when it scored three times to open up a 4-0 lead. Savannah Fitzpatrick first reached on an error and Allison Heffley made Stetson pay with a home run to left. After a pitching change, Teagan Shaw drew a bases loaded walk to finish the third-inning outburst.

The offensive fireworks continued in the top of the fourth as Harvard methodically increased its lead. Morgan Melito flied out to left field, scoring Trina Hoang, who led off the inning with a walk. Back-to-back singles from O'Heany and Kaitlin Lampson produced an additional two runs, and Shaw mashed a double to left to plate Lampson and the Crimson's ninth run of the afternoon.

Stetson finished the scoring on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth as Harvard completed an unblemished start to its season.

  • The Crimson won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2018. That team finished with a 23-18 record and won the Ivy League title.
