DELAND, Fla. – Harvard dropped its first game of the 2022 campaign on Saturday morning at the Hatter Classic. The Crimson (2-1) fell behind Marist early and could not recover, ultimately falling short in a 10-1, five-inning contest.
Â
The Red Foxes (4-4) dented the scoreboard twice in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. They later doubled their advantage an inning later on the strength of a solo home run and an RBI double.
Â
Madi Mays, who relieved
Grace Krantz, kept the Marist offense quiet in the third inning, but its bats came alive in the fourth as it plated six runs, pushing its lead to 10.
Â
In the bottom half of the fourth,
Lauren Bobowski led off with a single through the right side. Two outs later,
Morgan Melito stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI double, scoring
Megan Welsh, who reached on a fielder's choice. Despite having a runner in scoring position with two outs in both the fourth and fifth innings, Harvard was unable to get the big knock it needed to climb out of its deficit.
Â
Harvard returns to the diamond at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday to face Stetson for a second time. On Friday, the Crimson defeated the Hatters in five innings, 9-1.
