Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 6/6 Women’s Hockey Upended at No. 7/8 Colgate, 6-2

HAMILTON, N.Y. – For the first time since New Year's Day, No. 6/6 Harvard (16-6-0, 12-4-0 ECAC Hockey) suffered a defeat, dropping a road clash to No. 7/8 Colgate (21-6-1, 11-4-1 ECAC Hockey) on Friday afternoon by a score of 6-2.

The loss stops the Crimson's nine-game win streak in conference, and a seven-game spurt overall. Anne Bloomer and Kristin Della Rovere each scored a goal on the day but in the end, a potent Colgate power-play unit which went 4-4 on the day, was too much to overcome.

Becky Dutton made a season-high 35 saves in goal, but nevertheless saw her seven-game win-streak come to a close.

The goaltenders stole the show in the first period, with each netminder making 11 stops to send the game to the first intermission with zeros on the scoreboard. Harvard's Becky Dutton made several crucial kick saves while Colgate's Hannah Murphy stopped Paige Lester on a two-on-one Harvard rush.

In the second frame, two of ECAC Hockey's most dangerous offenses got going, combining for a total of five goals. Anne Bloomer started the action just 14 seconds into the period, scoring for the fourth straight game when Murphy turned the puck over behind her own net, allowing Harvard's Becca Gilmore to feed a backhand pass to Bloomer for a wrist-shot snipe.

The lead didn't last long for the Crimson, however, as the Raiders responded with three unanswered goals to take a two-score lead. Colgate's Kalty Kaltounkova netted two-straight, the first of which came on the power-play, before teammate Kaitlyn O'Donohoe scored another goal on the advantage, making it 3-1 with 6:09 to play in the period.

A series of Colgate penalties late in the middle frame gave Harvard several opportunities, including a brief five-on-three stint which the Crimson was unable to cash in. Kristin Della Rovere finally helped the power-play break through with 1:37 left in the period, scoring her 10th of the year with a snap-shot from the left circle.

What was a closely contested game through the opening 40 minutes swung in favor of the home team in the final third. Colgate scored a trio of third period goals as Tanner Gates, Rosy Demers and Sammy Smigliani each put one in the net to give the Raiders a 6-2 win.
