No. 9/9 Women’s Ice Hockey Drops 4-0 Decision to No. 8/8 Minn. Duluth in NCAA Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A superb season for No. 9/9 Harvard (22-10-1) came to an end on Thursday night as the Crimson suffered a 4-0 defeat to No. 8/8 Minnesota Duluth (24-11-1) in the first round of the 2022 Women's Ice Hockey Tournament at Ridder Arena. 
 
Goals in the opening minute of both the first and second periods by UMD's Gabbie Hughes gave the Bulldogs an advantage which it was able to maintain. 
 
Hughes finished with a hat trick in Duluth's victory while McKenzie Hewett added a third period goal. 
 
Senior Brooke Jovanovich led Harvard with seven shots on goal in the game. Crimson goaltender Becky Dutton made 26 saves on 30 shots faced, including several acrobatic stops which kept Harvard within striking distance for much of the contest. 

Harvard Highlights 

  • The game marked the first NCAA Tournament action for all 20 of the Crimson who appeared in the contest. 
  • Brooke Jovanovich fired seven shots on goal to lead the team. 
  • The Crimson committed zero penalties for the second time this the season. 
  • Kristin Della Rovere and Shannon Hollands each won nine face-offs. 
  • Jenna MacDonald, Anne Bloomer and Paige Lester blocked two shots apiece. The team totaled 10 blocked shots on the night, its 13th game this season with double-digit blocks.  

Game Notes 

  • Tonight marked Harvard's first NCAA Tournament game since the 2015 NCAA Championship vs. Minnesota, also played at Ridder Arena. 
  • The Crimson finish the season with 22 wins, its most since the 2014-15 season. 
  • The Crimson is now 8-12 in NCAA Tournament action all-time. 
  • Harvard finishes the season 5-7-0 against top-10 opponents. 
  • The Crimson fired 27 shots on goal to 30 for Minnesota Duluth. 
  • Harvard went 25-35 at the face-off dot in the game. 
  • Harvard went 0-1 on the power-play in the contest, while UMD went without an opportunity on the advantage. 
  • The Crimson moves to 5-15-1 vs. the Bulldogs all-time.
