Softball Downs North Dakota, Edged By California Baptist at UCR/CBU Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Harvard opened action at the UCR/CBU Classic at John C. Funk Stadium by defeating North Dakota, 3-0, and having its rally fall short against California Baptist, ultimately finishing on the short end of a 3-2 score on Friday afternoon. The split moved the Crimson to 5-6 on the season.

In its tournament-opening win over the Fighting Hawks, Anna Reed and Jannay Jones threw up zeroes for the first three innings. For Reed, it was a sign of things to come, but before continuing on in the bottom of the fourth inning, Allison Heffley provided an early cushion in the top half of the frame with a solo home run.

The Crimson maintained its advantage into the sixth inning and added more runs. Heffley led things off with a leadoff double and pinch runner Makenzie Tyler advanced to third base on a Teagan Shaw single. After a fielder's choice and a ground out, Molly Dickerson roped a double to left, scoring Kendall Jean and Shaw, giving Harvard a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile in the circle, Reed was still in the process of throwing a gem. Staked to a three-run cushion, the sophomore carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth and got the first two hitters to line and out ground out, respectively. Jocelyn Kirk, however, hit a bouncer up the middle and beat the throw to first base to break up the no-no. Reed eventually finished out the final inning-and-a-third to complete the shutout.

Similar to the UND game, Harvard's contest against the host Lancers featured three scoreless frames to start and a fourth-inning Crimson solo bomb to open the scoring. Megan Welsh provided the blast for her first home run of the campaign.

CBU answered in the fifth with three deciding runs, but Harvard threatened in the top of the seventh to make things interesting.

Shaw opened with a single to right and advanced to second on a groundout. Allison O'Heany followed with a walk, and one out later, Trina Hoang singled to left center, plating Shaw. The Crimson made things even more intriguing after Welsh walked to load the bases with two outs. Harvard, unfortunately, was unable to push the tying run across to send the game to the bottom of the seventh.

Harvard Highlights

  • Megan Welsh recorded a team-best three hits in the game vs. North Dakota. She added another vs. CBU to give her a team-best 13 base hits on the year.
  • Molly Dickerson came into the day with one RBI this season and came up with the clutch 2-RBI knock vs. UND.
  • Anna Reed's shutout was the first of her career and Harvard's first of the season. Reed also struck out six North Dakota hitters.
