RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Harvard softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the UCR/CBU Classic on Saturday at John C. Funk Stadium. The Crimson (6-7) dropped a tough 4-3 decision to North Dakota before rebounding with a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary's.
The Crimson began its first game of the day vs. North Dakota on a solid note when
Megan Welsh hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the second inning, scoring
Kendall Jean and giving Harvard the early 1-0 lead. The fourth featured a Fighting Hawks tying run only to have the Crimson move back in front after
Kaitlin Lampson singled to right, plating
Lauren Bobowski, and
Allison Heffley reaching on an error, bringing Lampson home.
Holding onto a two-run lead in the fifth, the Crimson found itself in tight spot with the bases loaded and no outs.
Anna Reed was called into relief and got the first batter she faced to pop out, but a fielder's choice brought home a run. Reed escaped the jam by inducing a strikeout and preserving what was now a 3-2 lead.
After a quiet sixth inning, North Dakota's Jocelyn Kirk doubled through the left side in the top of the seventh, scoring Madi Moore, who reached on a single. An error allowed Kirk to move to third and eventually home to post the go-ahead run.
Harvard had a chance to level the score in its half of the inning after
Morgan Melito walked and Jean singled with two outs. The Crimson, however, would end the game with a ground out, thwarting its rally.
After a brief break, Harvard returned to the diamond to face the Gaels and immediately got an RBI double from Jean in the first inning. Two frames later, Jean was up to her old tricks, doubling once again to center. Both knocks scored Melito, who singled each time. With Jean on second,
Allison O'Heany came to the plate and kept the line moving with an RBI single to center, extending Harvard's lead to 3-0.
The Gaels got one run back on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third and the score stayed at 3-1, in favor of the Crimson, until Saint Mary's added one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
After
Katie Arrambide went five innings, Reed came on in relief and was nearly perfect. The sophomore was tough on SMC in the bottom of the seventh, getting a ground out to start, but then allowing a one-out double. After that, Reed got Lindsay Cabral to strike out swinging and Sasa Koria to fly out to secure the Crimson victory.
