Softball Falls to Saint Mary’s on Final Day of UCR/CBU Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Harvard completed action at the UCR/CBU Classic on Sunday morning and fell to Saint Mary's, 7-5, in a back-and-forth game at John C. Funk Stadium. The loss dropped the Crimson to 6-8 on the season.

Harvard fell behind early, allowing three first-inning runs on a single and fielder's choice, and two additional runs in the second thanks to a double to left field.

A Teagan Shaw one-out walk followed by a Madi Mays single started the Harvard rally in the bottom of the second. With two runners on base, Kaitlin Lampson reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Shaw. Later in the frame, Lauren Bobowski and Morgan Melito hit back-to-back singles with each bringing home a run, which reduced its deficit to 5-3.

Harvard eventually leveled the score in the fourth inning. Makenzie Tyler led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk and scored on a throwing error when Lampson grounded to shortstop. The error allowed Lampson to reach third base and the junior later came around to score on a wild pitch.

A scoreless fifth inning followed, but the Gaels moved ahead in the sixth on an RBI single, which scored a pair of runs. With six outs left to make noise, Harvard was unable to get anything going at the plate to fall short in the final game of the tournament.

Harvard Highlights

  • The Crimson drew a season-high-tying six walks, something it has accomplished four times in 2021-22.
