DETROIT, Mich. – Harvard University wrestling sophomore 165-pounder
Philip Conigliaro won his round of 32 matchup to highlight his first day of competition at the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena.
A native of Dedham, Mass., Conigliaro – the No. 8 seed at 165 – opened the day with a 6-4 win in the round of 32 before dropping a 7-3 decision in the round of 16. Conigliaro will resume competition in the wrestlebacks on Friday morning.
Conigliaro opened competition with a 6-4 win over No. 25 seed Brevin Casella (21-14) of Binghamton in the round of 32. Conigliaro scored a pair of takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead after one. He added an escape in each of the second and third stanzas to close out the win.
Facing No. 9 seed Payton Hall (27-3) of West Virginia in the round of 16, Conigliaro dropped a 7-3 decision. Conigliaro opened the match with a takedown and remained within 3-2 at the end of the first period. Conigliaro scored an escape to send the match to the third period tied at 3-3 before Hall notched an escape, takedown, and riding time point in the final frame.
The 2022 EIWA Champion at 165, Conigliaro moved his record to 20-5 on the season and to 12-5 against opponents in the NCAA field. Ranked No. 2 in the NCAA RPI and No. 9 in the NCAA coaches rankings entering the championships, Conigliaro has won nine of his last 10 bouts.
