NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Harvard stepped into Ivy League play for the first time since 2019 and swept its first two games, defeating Yale, 3-1 and 1-0, on Friday afternoon at 5K Corral Field at Dewitt Family Stadium. The victories propelled the Crimson to 8-10 on the season (2-0 Ivy), while the Bulldogs fell to 2-10 (0-2 Ivy).
Â
Harvard used a pair of hit-by-pitches in the third inning of Game 1 to help get its offense going. After pair of free passes the hard way put
Kaitlin Lampson and
Megan Welsh on base,
Lauren Bobowski put the ball in play and reached on an error, which scored Lampson.
Morgan Melito followed with an RBI groundout to second base, plating Welsh to put the Crimson ahead, 2-0.
Â
The Bulldogs cut their lead in half in the fifth inning, but Harvard added an insurance run in the sixth after Melito opened with a single and stole second with one out.
Madi Mays provided the big hit, delivering a two-out single to center field and some breathing room.
Â
The Crimson pitching was brilliant as it received four innings of shutout ball from starter
Anna Reed. The first-year, however, encountered traffic in the fourth, leaving with the bases loaded with no outs and giving way to
Lindsay G. Poulos. The junior responded by striking out the next two batters and inducing a pop out to escape the jam.
Â
Poulos later got in and out of a bases loaded situation in the sixth before shutting the door in the seventh to preserve Harvard's Ivy-opening victory.
Â
Game 2 was a pitcher's duel between
Katie Arrambide and Yale's Nicole Conway as they both went the full seven innings. Harvard recorded five of its seven hits in the first four innings, but could not secure the hit it needed to take the lead. Arrambide, meanwhile, allowed just two hits, but none after the fourth frame to keep the Crimson in the game.
Â
Arrambide's late-inning effort paid off as
Trina Hoang reached on an error with one out in the top of the seventh, stole second and crossed home plate on a Welsh fly out. The run was all Harvard needed as Arrambide proceeded to strike out the last two Yale hitters to polish off her afternoon.
