Baseball Holds UCLA to One Hit in 5-0 Shutout

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Junior left-handed pitcher Tim Williamson threw six shutout innings in the start, and first-year Tanner Smith and sophomore Jay Driver combined for three innings of scoreless relief as Harvard University baseball held UCLA to one hit in a 5-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
 
Playing in the second game of a three-game series, the Crimson (8-6) scored one run in each of the first, second, and fifth innings before adding two runs in the eighth, while blanking the host Bruins (11-7) in the penultimate game of the team's eight-game, 10-day road trip to the state of California. Harvard registered its second win over a Power Five program this season.
 
Williamson tallied six strikeouts over his 6.0 innings, while allowing just one hit and two walks. Smith threw 1.0 inning without giving up a hit before Driver tossed 2.0 innings – with five of his six outs coming via strikeout and not permitting a hit or walk.
 
The Crimson offense registered 12 hits, tying a season high with five doubles. Juniors Logan Bravo, Will Jacobsen, and Hunter Baldwin as well as sophomore Chris Snopek all posted multiple hits in the game.
 
Harvard opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI double from sophomore Ben Rounds. Jacobsen scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second before driving home a run with a double in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-0. Baldwin extended the margin to 5-0 in the top of the eighth with a two-run single to left field.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior left-handed pitcher Tim Williamson earned the win (2-1) in the start, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and six strikeouts. He hurled 6.0 innings for the second time in his four starts this year.
  • Sophomore right-handed relief pitcher Jay Driver came on for the game's final six outs with five of them coming via strikeout. He finished with 2.0 innings pitched, no runs, no hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. He has tossed 7.2 innings over four appearances this season without allowing a run. He has permitted just three hits and no walks with 14 strikeouts.
  • First-year right-handed reliever Tanner Smith threw 1.0 inning without allowing a run or hit. He has not allowed a run or hit in each of his last three appearances.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a double. He posted three hits in a game for the first time this year.
  • Junior Logan Bravo notched a 2-for-5 effort with a double and run scored. He leads the team with six doubles this year. He tallied his seventh multi-hit game of the year and extended his hit streak to six games.
  • Junior Hunter Baldwin finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He posted his second multi-hit game of the season.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek recorded a 2-for-5 day with a double. He has compiled eight mult-hit games in 2022 and moved his hitting streak to six games. He paces the Crimson with a .423 batting average on the year.
  • Bravo, Snopek, and first-year George Cooper all extended hitting streaks to six games while sophomores Ben Rounds and Jake Berger moved hit streaks to five games. Berger has reached base safely in nine straight games. 

Game Notes

  • The Crimson posted its second win over a team from a Power Five conference this season. Harvard also beat the ACC's Miami, 11-6, in the season opener on Feb. 25.
  • Harvard registered its second shutout this season. The Crimson also blanked Rice, 3-0, on March 4.
  • Harvard tallied 12 hits in the game for its sixth straight game with nine or more hits. The Crimson has posted double-figure hits in five of its last six games. Harvard hit five doubles in the game, tying a season high.
  • The Crimson pitching staff totaled 11 strikeouts against just three walks over the 9.0 innings.
  • The Crimson improved to 4-3 on its West Coast swing.
  • Harvard improved to 2-6 all-time vs. UCLA.
