BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Harvard opened its first day at the Green and Gold Classic on the short end of its contests vs. Longwood and UAB on Saturday at Mary Bowers Field. The Crimson fell to the Lancers, 3-0, before falling to the Blazers, 6-0. The two decisions slid Harvard to 3-4 on the campaign.
Â
In the opener vs. Longwood, the Crimson allowed a two-run home run in the first and an RBI single in the third, putting it in a 3-0 hole early on. Harvard, which walked three times in the first two innings, could not take advantage, and had its chances in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Â
In the fourth and fifth, the Crimson had two on and one out, but came up empty, and then had runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth, but again could not come up with the timely hit. As the game moved to the seventh and with three outs left to start a rally,
Lauren Bobowski reached on an error with one out only to have
Allison Heffley and
Morgan Melito pop out and ground out to third base, respectively, to send Harvard to 3-3 on the season.
Â
In the night cap vs. the Green and Gold Classic hosts, UAB, Crimson starter
Lindsay G. Poulos and Blazer pitcher Makenna Pierce matched each other for five shutout innings. Pierce put up a zero in the top of the sixth inning and unfortunately, Poulos blinked first and allowed two runs before being lifted for
Grace Krantz. Four more runs would come around to score as Harvard was blanked, falling to 3-4 overall.
