Softball Splits Two Games on Final Day of Green and Gold Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Harvard split two games on the final day of the Green and Gold Classic at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The Crimson defeated Longwood, 5-1, before dropping a 5-0 decision to tournament host UAB.

Harvard returned to the field Sunday morning for brunch-time contest vs. Lancers and fell behind, 1-0, in the second inning on an RBI groundout to shortstop. The Crimson, however, answered in the bottom of the third when Allison Heffley reached on an error, plating Trina Hoang. Morgan Melito then came to the batter's box and promptly laced a single to center field, bringing Megan Welsh around to score to push Harvard out in front, 2-1.

Brianna Jewett replaced Lindsay G. Poulos in the circle to start the top of the fourth inning and put up the first of four consecutive zeroes. The Crimson, looking to add insurance runs, opened the bottom of the sixth with a pair of fly-outs only to have Ella Lee draw a walk. Lauren Bobowski reached on an error and Hoang walked to load the bases. Then with Welsh at the plate, a passed ball led to Lee and Bobowski scoring. During the same at-bat, another passed ball allowed Hoang to touch home plate from third, which rounded out the morning's scoring.

In the Green and Gold Classic finale vs. the Blazers, Harvard could not take advantage of a couple of opportunities in the first few innings. The Crimson had the bases loaded in the first, but was unable to get the big hit. Then in the third, Harvard was in business with runners on first and second with one out, but a double play thwarted the chance.

UAB, meanwhile, got one run in the first inning and four in the second, while keeping Harvard off the base paths in the final four innings to emerge with the victory.

Harvard Highlights

  • Brianna Jewett picked up her first victory of the season after pitching four innings of scoreless relief vs. Longwood. She gave up three hits, while starter Lindsay G. Poulos allowed one run and two hits in three innings.
  • Trina Hoang scored twice vs. Longwood, matching her season best, which was originally set vs. Rhode Island on Feb. 25.
  • Megan Welsh had both of the Crimson's hits in the game vs. UAB.
