CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Winning the Ivy League championship title in front of an electric crowd at home, the No. 14 Harvard men's tennis team (18-4, 7-0 Ivy League) swept Yale, 4-0, at the Beren Tennis Center this afternoon. With the win, the Crimson concludes the regular season undefeated in conference play with a perfect 7-0 record.
Harvard took an early lead in the match after claiming the doubles point for the eighth time in its last nine matches. Despite falling on court two, the Crimson fought back to take two-straight wins on courts one and three to clinch the point.
Steven Sun and
Henry von der Schulenburg battled to a 7-6 (3) win in the No. 3 spot, before
Brian Shi and
Daniel Milavsky secured a gritty 7-6 (4) victory in the No. 1 spot to put the Crimson ahead 1-0.
The Crimson went on to take the next three singles matches to seal its victory.
Ronan Jachuck cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win on court four to make it a 2-0 Harvard lead.
Steven Sun increased the Crimson's advantage to 3-0 with quick work on court five, defeating his Bulldog opponent, 6-2, 6-1. In fitting fashion on senior day, captain and senior
Brian Shi clinched the match for Harvard with a thrilling 6-4, 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot.
"What a great finish to a regular season," stated
Andrew Rueb '95, The Scott Mead '77 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Tennis. "Yale threw the kitchen sink at us. They are well coached and much improved team. It took everyone's best to get the win today.
It is so hard to run the gauntlet of the Ivy League undefeated. We had to play indoors and outdoors in the wind. Home and away. Didn't matter.
We had a target on our backs in each match. We got everyone's absolute best tennis and each time we were up for the challenge. This is a special group. It is rare to see a talented team that is also so gritty.
The team set lofty goals for themselves and they are rising up the challenge. Winning ECAC's and the Ivy League are two of the stops along the way. We haven't played our best tennis yet and look forward to the NCAAs in a few weeks. Onwards!"
