Baseball Drops Weekend Finale to Brown, 7-5, Still Takes Series, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Logan Bravo and sophomore Ben Rounds each posted three hits, and senior right-handed pitcher Jaren Zinn tallied 10 strikeouts, but Harvard University baseball dropped a 7-5 decision to Brown University in the series finale of a three-game set on Sunday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
Closing out its first home series in over 1,000 days, the Crimson (13-9, 5-1 Ivy) plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within two before the rally fell short against the visiting Bears (5-14, 2-4 Ivy). Harvard still took the series, 2-1, after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, 17-7 and 7-1.
 
In game three, Bravo went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a double, and a run while Rounds finished 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Sophomores Chris Snopek and Jake Berger and junior Spencer Williams each registered two hits on the day as the Crimson totaled 15 hits as a team. On the mound, Zinn tossed 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts while sophomore Uday Narottam threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
 
For the series, Rounds hit .571 (8-for-14) with five RBIs, three doubles, and five runs scored while Snopek tallied a .545 batting average (6-for-11) with four RBIs, four runs, two doubles, and a triple. Berger hit .500 (6-for-12) with four runs and two RBIs, and Bravo hit .462 (6-for-13) with five RBIs, three doubles, and four runs.
 
After Brown opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second, Harvard answered in the bottom half of the frame as first-year Peter Levin hustled home on a wild pitch. The Crimson took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Snopek scored following a Berger single. In the top of the seventh the Bears plated five runs to go ahead 7-2. Harvard scored three runs in the last of the seventh off a sacrifice fly from Snopek, double from Bravo, and single from Berger before Brown closed out the game.

  • Junior Logan Bravo went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a double, and a run in the game. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He leads the team with 10 doubles on the season and has posted 11 multi-hit games on the year.
  • Sophomore Ben Rounds finished 3-for-5 with a double and a run. He has posted a hit in six straight games and has reached base safely in 13 straight games.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek posted a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and a run. He leads the team with 12 multi-hit games this season, while hitting .402 with a .490 on-base percentage.
  • Sophomore Jake Berger notched a 2-for-5 effort with an RBI. He has reached base safely in 17 straight games.
  • Junior Spencer Williams finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and a walk.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Jaren Zinn threw 5.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts. He tallied double-figure strikeouts for the second time this season and has posted eight or more strikeouts in three of his last four starts.
  • Sophomore Uday Narottam hurled 2.0 innings of relief in the eighth and ninth stanzas without allowing a hit, run, or walk. He tallied a season-high four strikeouts while facing the minimum six batters. Narottam has registered a 1.26 ERA on the year.

Game Notes

  • Five Crimson batters posted multiple hits on the day while eight Crimson batters notched at least one hit as Harvard compiled 15 hits as a team. Harvard tallied 13 or more hits in each game of the series.
  • Harvard has posted double-figure hits in five of its last six games. The Crimson has recorded at least eight hits in all six Ivy games this season.
  • For the series, Harvard tallied 29 runs, 47 hits, 11 doubles, three triples, and 25 RBIs. The Crimson posted a .405 team batting average and .455 team on-base percentage.
