Baseball Falls to Massachusetts in Beanpot, 9-5

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Logan Bravo tallied three hits, and sophomores Ben Rounds and Chris Snopek each scored two runs, but Harvard University baseball fell to the University of Massachusetts, 9-5, in the semifinals of The Baseball Beanpot on Tuesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
At the midway point of its seven-game homestand, the Crimson (13-10) held a 5-3 lead through five innings before the visiting Minutemen (11-9-1) scored the game's final six runs.
 
Bravo finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base while Rounds totaled two runs, a double, a walk, and a stolen base and Snopek posted two runs, a hit, and a walk. Sophomore Peter Messervy went 2-for-3 with a walk and stolen base.
 
After UMass opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Harvard cut the margin in half with an RBI single to left field from sophomore Jake Berger in the bottom of the frame. The Minutemen went up 3-1 in the top of the third before the Crimson responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Rounds and Snopek both came home on wild pitches to start the stanza's scoring before junior Spencer Williams worked a walk to score another run. An RBI single to left field from Bravo gave Harvard a 5-3 lead in the fourth before UMass scored six runs over the final four frames.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Logan Bravo went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base. He extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Bravo posted his 12th multi-hit game of the year, including his fourth game with three hits.
  • Sophomore Ben Rounds compiled a double, two runs, a walk, and a stolen base. He reached base safely for the 14th consecutive game and notched a hit for the seventh straight game.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek tallied two runs, a hit, and a walk.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. He registered his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Sophomore Jake Berger recorded a hit, an RBI, a run, and two walks in the contest. He pushed his reached base safely streak to 18 games and is on a six-game hitting streak.
  • Junior right-hander James Kirkpatrick threw 1.0 inning of scoreless relief. He faced the minimum three batters in the top of the fourth, forcing three groundouts.

Game Notes

  • The Crimson tallied eight hits and seven walks in the game.
  • The Crimson will face Northeastern in the consolation game of The Beanpot on Tuesday, Apr. 12. The Huskies fell to Boston College, 4-2, in the other semifinal game.
  • Harvard moved to 19-35-1 all-time in The Beanpot, including a 13-17 mark in the semifinals and a 6-11 record against UMass.
  • The Crimson moved to 33-21 all-time against the Minutemen.
