Baseball Beats Dartmouth in Game Two, 6-1, to Split Twin Bill

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Logan Bravo went 7-for-9 with seven RBIs on the day, and first-year right-hander Sean Matson threw 6.2 scoreless innings in game two as Harvard University baseball topped Dartmouth College in the nightcap, 6-1, after dropping a narrow decision in game one, 8-6, in an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
Opening a three-game set, the Crimson (16-18, 8-8 Ivy) took a 6-0 lead through four innings on its way to the game two victory following an opener in which Harvard rallied to pull within 6-5 in the eighth inning before the visiting Big Green (20-16, 11-6 Ivy) held on for the win.
 
Bravo hit .778 (7-for-9) between the two games with seven RBIs, three doubles, two runs scored, and a home run – his sixth of the season. First-year George Cooper went 5-for-8 (.625) with three runs, two RBIs, and a triple. On the mound in game two, Matson tossed 6.2 innings, permitting no runs on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts before junior Tim Williamson threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
 
In game two, the Crimson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first behind an RBI single from Bravo and an RBI double from sophomore Jake Berger. Bravo doubled Harvard's lead to 4-0 in the second with a two-run home run to left field. The Crimson moved ahead 6-0 in the fourth with an RBI single from Cooper and sacrifice fly from Bravo. Dartmouth plated one unearned run in the top of the eighth to complete the scoring.
 
In game two, Bravo gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead in the first with a double down the right field line. Dartmouth scored the game's next five runs, moving ahead 5-1 with two runs in the second, one in the third, and two in the fifth. The Crimson pulled within 6-5 with an RBI single from Cooper in the seventh prior to a solo home run from Bravo and two-run homer from sophomore Peter Messervy in the eighth. Dartmouth moved ahead 8-5 in the top of the ninth before Bravo brought in the game's final run with an RBI in the last of the frame.
 
The Crimson celebrated Senior Day in between Saturday's two games, honoring Jaren Zinn, Jack Mahala, and Joseph O'Connell from the Class of 2022. Harvard also recognized members of the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 as a part of the ceremony.

Harvard Highlights: Game 1

  • Junior first baseman Logan Bravo went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, a home run, a double, and a run scored. Bravo blasted his sixth home run of the season and tallied four hits in a game for the first time on the year.
  • Sophomore right fielder Peter Messervy finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a home run, a run scored, and a walk. He notched his third homer of the year.
  • Junior third baseman Will Jacobsen posted a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored.
  • First-year second baseman George Cooper went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Junior center fielder Hunter Baldwin notched two hits, including a double, with a run scored. He posted his sixth multi-hit game of the year.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Ben Rounds posted a double and a run scored.
  • Harvard tallied 14 hits in game one, posting double-figure hits for the 10th time in Ivy League play. Five Crimson batters notched multi-hit games. 

Harvard Highlights: Game 2

  • First-year right-handed pitcher Sean Matson threw a career-high 6.2 innings in the win in the start, permitting no runs on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
  • Junior left-hander Tim Williamson hurled 2.1 innings in the relief, giving up just one unearned run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
  • Junior first baseman Logan Bravo went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two doubles, and one run scored. Bravo posted four or more RBIs in a game for the second time this season. He registered his sixth three-hit game of the year.
  • First-year second baseman George Cooper finished 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI, and a triple. He notched his third three-hit game of the season.
  • Sophomore shortstop Jake Berger tallied a double and an RBI.
  • Junior catcher Zach Brown registered a double and a run scored.
  • Junior center fielder Hunter Baldwin added a double and a walk.
  • The Crimson posted 12 hits in game two, totaling double-figure hits for the 11th time in 16 Ivy League games.

Game Notes

  • Junior Logan Bravo totaled two multi-hit and two multi-RBI games on the day. He now has 17 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games on the year. He posted his first four-hit game of the year and notched four or more RBIs in a game for the second time on the season. Bravo leads the Crimson with 15 doubles on the year.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen notched his 14th multi-hit game of the year and has now reached base safely in 12 straight games.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy notched his eighth multi-hit game and second multi-RBI game of the year. He hit his third homer of the year – all in Ivy play.
  • Playing for the first time since April 16, first-year George Cooper recorded a pair of multi-hit games, moving his season total to 12. He registered his third three-hit game of the year. Cooper leads the Crimson with three triples on the season.
  • Harvard totaled 26 hits – including nine doubles, a triple, and two home runs – between the two games with 14 hits in game one and 12 hits in game two. The Crimson has now totaled double-figure hits in 11 of 16 Ivy games. Harvard posted a .410 OBP and .366 average in the doubleheader.
  • The Crimson pitching staff limited the Big Green to a .224 average between the two games.
  • Prior to game one, Harvard recognized the Crimson's 1997 team on the 25th anniversary of its Ivy League championship and NCAA tournament appearance.
  • Harvard moved to 135-130 all-time vs. Dartmouth.
