CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard had its three-game winning streak stopped on Tuesday as it fell to Boston University in a doubleheader, 5-0 and 8-1 in six innings, at Soldiers Field. The non-conference losses dropped the Crimson to 12-15 on the year, while the Terriers improved to 25-13.
Â
In Game 1, Harvard gave up an early run in the first inning with
Lindsay G. Poulos putting up a zero in the ensuing frame. In the third inning, however, the Crimson encountered trouble as BU had three consecutive two-out hits, plating three runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Brianna Jewett entered in relief with the bases loaded and promptly induced a pop up to the circle to end the threat.
Â
The Harvard offense put runners on base in each of the first three innings, but by the time it put the first two hitters aboard in the fourth inning, the Crimson trailed by five after the Terriers led off the frame with a solo shot. Despite having
Allison Heffley reaching on a double and
Teagan Shaw getting hit by a pitch, Harvard could not manufacture the clutch hit to dent the scoreboard.
Â
For the final three stanzas, the Crimson kept Boston University from increasing its lead, but could not find the necessary firepower at the plate overcome its deficit.
Â
In Game 2, Harvard used a leadoff walk from
Lauren Bobowski to get things going. The sophomore stole second base and Heffley stroked a one-out single to left field to knock in the Crimson's first run of the day. Harvard managed to get
Megan Welsh aboard on a single up the middle, but both she and Heffley wound up being stranded.
Â
Harvard's lead, however, was short-lived the first three Terriers reached in the top of the second.
Katie Arrambide got Audrey Sellers to line out to shortstop, but a hit-by-pitch, two fielder's choices and a double put BU ahead, 4-1. One inning later, the Terriers' AJ Huerta-Leipner hit a two-run home run to increase their lead to 6-1.
Â
The Crimson offense struggled to build any momentum as the sun was setting. The game was eventually called due to darkness after BU scored two runs in the top of the sixth and Harvard failing to add to its run total, providing the final margin.
Harvard Highlights
- Allison Heffley went 3-for-6 across both games. She is currently on a nine-game hitting streak.
