CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Kaitlin Lampson's eighth-inning single with two outs scored
Ella Lee to lift Harvard past Dartmouth, 4-3, in extra innings to help the Crimson secure the series. The win moved Harvard into sole possession of second place in the Ivy League at 13-5 (19-17 overall), one game in front of the Big Green (18-23; 12-6 Ivy).
Â
Similar to Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, Dartmouth enjoyed an early lead, getting one run in the first inning and two more in the second.
Â
The Crimson kept the Big Green off the board in the third inning and its offense got going in its half of the frame. Lee and Lampson led off with singles and eventually found themselves at second and third as a result of an errant throw by Dartmouth's pitcher, Brooke Plonka.
Â
After a
Morgan Melito pop up,
Lauren Bobowski reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, bringing up
Allison Heffley. During the catcher's at-bat, Plonka uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Lee to score. Heffley eventually popped up to short and
Madi Mays followed with a 2-RBI single to level the score at 3-3.
Â
Over the next four innings, the rubber match became a pitcher's duel, featuring
Anna Reed and Megan Hagge, who entered the game in the fourth. Both hurlers threw up zeros on the scoreboard and the game moved to extras.
Â
Reed got two quick outs in the top of the eighth and then allowed a single and walk, putting Dartmouth in a position to get the go-ahead run. The sophomore, however, got Alaana Panu to line out to
Trina Hoang at second.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Harvard was retired in its first two plate appearances only to have Lee double to left field. Lampson opened her at-bat in a 1-2 hole, but fought back to make the count full. Then on the ninth pitch of the at-bat, the junior came up with the game-winning knock.
Â
Between Lee and Lampson, the duo was 5-for-7 at the plate with three runs and one RBI. Individually, Lee enjoyed a career day, going 3-for-4 with two runs. For Lampson (2-for-3), meanwhile, it was her fifth multi-hit effort of the season and is 4-for-7 over her last three outings.
Â
As for Reed, she picked up her 12
th win of the campaign and finished with five strikeouts to give her eight in 13.2 innings, which covers her Game 2 and 3 appearances.
Â
Harvard returns to action on Tuesday, May 3, when it faces Cornell on the road. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET with the games airing live on ESPN+.
