Sailing Ends Year with Fourth Place Result at ICSA Women’s Dinghy Championship

NEW ORLEANS – Concluding its 2021-22 season at the Southern Yacht Club on Lake Pontchartrain, Harvard finished in fourth place at the ICSA Women's Dinghy National Championship hosted by Tulane.

The regatta marked the last of three straight National Championship events for the Crimson, following a seventh-place finish at the Team Race National Championship and a 10th place showing at the Open Dinghy Championship. In all, Harvard spent a total of 11 straight days competing in New Orleans and was one of just ten schools to appear in all three of the National Championship events held.

The Crimson women began racing in the Western Semifinal on Monday and Tuesday, surging past the competition to take first place in the heat and move on to the final.

Senior Emma Kaneti served as the A-division skipper for Harvard, leading the team to first place in the division alongside crews Marbella Marlo and Marleigh Belsley. The Crimson also nabbed third in the B-division with Sarah Burn, Cordelia Burn and Marlo combining at skipper with Corinne Lee and Juliana Ruggieri at crew.

In the finals, stormy conditions on Wednesday followed by light winds on Thursday limited competition to 11 races in each of the two divisions. The Crimson lineup consisted of Kaneti and Sarah Burn as the primary skippers, with Belsley, Lee, Marlo, Ruggiero and Alexandra Dorofeev as crews.

Harvard found itself leading the championship after seven rounds, in large part because of three early first-place finishes in the A-division. A 31-point total in the eighth round set the Crimson back, however, ultimately landing the team in fourth place at regatta's end with a total score of 139.

Boston College won the event with a score of 114, followed closely by Yale (116) and Stanford (119).
