Sailing Ready for 5-Regatta Weekend

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing opens the month of October this weekend with five regattas on its schedule. The Crimson is slated to compete in the Saturday-only Smith Trophy (MIT host) and BU Invitational (Boston Univ. host), and the two-day Women's ACC – Round 1 (Bowdoin host), Danmark Trophy (US Coast Guard host) and Moody Trophy (Rhode Island host).

Forecast

Smith Trophy, BU Invitational | Cambridge, Mass.
Sunny skies are expected on Saturday, with temperatures in the mid-60s. The wind is expected out of the north, north-northeast and northeast between 7-9 knots.

Women's ACC – Round 1 | Harpswell, Maine
The sun will be shining on Saturday in Vacationland, with the temperature holding at 66 degrees. The wind will be blowing between 5-6 knots out of the north-northwest. Sunday will have some cloud cover and will be a couple degrees cooler. The wind will be similar to Saturday, but originate out of the southeast.

Danmark Trophy | New London, Conn.
Let me know if you have heard this before, but Saturday will be sunny. Temps, however, will be slightly warmer than Cambridge and Harpswell, inching toward 70 degrees. The wind will mainly be out of the northeast and north-northeast, and check in between 6-8 knots. Sunday will be in the mid-60s and be mostly cloudy. The wind will pick up, reaching close to nine knots (ENE, E, ESE).

Moody Trophy | South Kingstown, R.I.
It is poised to be a great Saturday in Rhode Island with sunny skies, temps in the mid-to-upper 60s and wind between 6-9 knots (NNE, NE, ENE). Sunday, meanwhile, is set to be partly cloudy and temps in the mid-60s. The wind is forecasting to be at seven knots all day and out of the east.

What to Know

  • Harvard is coming off what was expected to be a busy weekend to one that featured just two regattas due to the nor'easter that came through the East Coast. The Eagle Invitational (Boston College host) and Hood Trophy (Tufts host) were both canceled, the Mrs. Hurst Bowl was limited to one A-Division race and the Hoyt Trophy ended up being a Sunday-only event.
  • Kate Danielson and JJ Drummond won the first race of the Mrs. Hurst Bowl (Dartmouth host) and it was all Harvard needed to win the regatta. Grace Montgomery and Skyler Reading were on site and ready for B-Division sailing before the weather put a damper on the weekend.
  • At the Hoyt Trophy (Brown host), Harvard had Harrison Strom and Zia Zucker compete in the A-Division, while Zoey Ziskind, William Bourell (1-2) and Amelie Zucker (3-10) drew the B-Division assignment. Strom-Z. Zucker had a single-digit-finish run in Races 3-7 (4-6-7-3-3) en route to a score of 80. Ziskind-A. Zucker, meanwhile, had five single-digit finishes in the last eight races, winning Race 8, before registering a 66. Ziskind-Bourell opened the regatta with a 10-5 performance in the first two outings.
  • The Crimson's upcoming schedule this weekend features the same five regattas as last year. Harvard came in 11th at the BU Invitational and 13th at the Smith Trophy, which were both one-day events. The Crimson went on to finish in fourth place at the Danmark Trophy, 7th at the Women's ACC – Round 1 and 11th at the Moody Trophy. Only this week's Women's ACC – Round 1 will take place at a different venue than 2025 (Last year – Annapolis, Md.; This year – Harpswell, Maine).
  • Harvard last week also competed at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta in Chicago, Illinois. The event was the first in a three-race series, with the others coming Oct. 9-11 (Long Island Sound Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta) and Nov. 13-15 (Pacific Northwest Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta). Representing the Crimson were Xavier Ayala-Vermont, James Bergstrom, Julia Downey, Pax Huybers, Theresa Straw and Emily Chamish. The group ultimately finished in seventh place in the J105 Division with a score of 19. US Coast Guard won with a seven.

Up Next

Harvard is slated to appear at the Open ACC – Round 1 (St. Mary's host), Stu Nelson Trophy (Connecticut College host) and Sister Ester Trophy (Salve Regina host). All three regattas are set for Saturday, Oct. 10-Sunday, Oct. 11.
