VARESE, Italy – Four members of the Harvard Heavyweight Rowing team earned gold medals at the 2022 Under-23 World Championships this past weekend. Douwe de Graff '22 and
Calvin Tarczy '22 rowed to the gold in the men's fours event while
Thomas Horncastle '23 and Thomas O'Sullivan '25 earned the gold in the men's eights event. All four Crimson rowers were representing their home country of Great Britain at the Championships. Harvard Assistant Coach,
Patrick Lapage '12, coached the rowers at the competition.
The fours boat, stroked by de Graaf, posted a five-second win in its heat, before outpacing New Zealand in the Finals by less than three seconds with a time of 6:03.04. Tarczy rowed in the third seat on the gold-medal boat.
It was a similar outcome for the UK's eights boat that saw Horncastle and O'Sullivan row in the fifth and sixth seats, respectively. After posting a five-plus second win in its Heat, the boat cruised to the gold medal in the finals with a time of 5:51.71.
Victor Kleshnev '23 also rowed in the competition on Great Britain's quadruple sculls boat. Kleshnev sat in the bow on the boat that took first place in the B Finals and a seventh place finish overall in the competition.
