Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Leel's Late Goal Lifts No. 12 Field Hockey to 3-2 Win Over No. 23 American

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Lucy Leel's goal with 6:16 to play helped lift No. 12 Harvard field hockey (2-2) to a comeback 3-2 victory over No. 23 American (3-3) at the Terrapin Invitational.

The Crimson trailed twice in the game by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 before rallying in the second half. Harvard held a 10-3 advantage on shot attempts in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the opening half, American struck first, as a redirection in front on a shot off a penalty corner by Federica Turna Dellamaggiore put the Eagles in front with 5:32 to go in the second quarter.

Harvard had two good chances late in the half, both off the stick of sophomore Megan Joel, with the first sailing wide of the net and the second turned away with under a minute to play by American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood.

A wild third quarter saw Harvard even the score twice, with Shahbo mixing in two fantastic saves to help Harvard stay in the game.

Harvard first tied it at 1-1 at 12:54 of the third quarter as junior Emily Berlinghof sent a pass into the circle from out wide that senior captain Olivia Hoover redirected into the cage.

Shahbo made two sprawling saves on American chances off penalty corners moments later to keep the game tied.

But just over eight minutes later, a penalty stroke goal by Alexa Kratz at 4:51 helped American retake the lead.

Harvard tied it again, with Berlinghof sending a shot forward under Underwood's pad off a pass into the circle by Emily Guckian to make it 2-2 at 4:09.

The Crimson had a golden opportunity to take its first lead early in the fourth quarter but Siofra Murdoch's penalty stroke chance at 12:31 was turned away by Underwo0d.

Harvard scored the game-winner on a great play in transition, as Guckian found an open Leel on the right side of the circle. Leel cut around Underwood and found the net from a sharp angle to give the Crimson the deciding score.
