No. 7 Field Hockey Opens Season With OT Thriller, Defeating No. 24 Miami, 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With 4:06 remaining in overtime, first-year Bronte-May Brough scored on a penalty corner to lift the 7th-ranked Harvard field hockey team (1-0) to a 1-0 win over No. 24 Miami University (2-1) in its season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Harvard had its first good chance of the game at the tail end of the opening quarter, with a penalty corner earned as the clock expired. Bronte-May Brough's shot from straight away was kicked by Miami goalkeeper Isabelle Perese.

In the second quarter, both teams exchanged chances in the late minutes of the quarter, with the goalkeepers coming up with big stops to keep the game scoreless.

The intensity picked up in the second half, with each team earning penalty corner chances late in regulation.

With 8:16 to go in the fourth quarter, Miami's Reese Wearren had her penalty corner blocked. Then Harvard earned two penalty corners in the final five minutes, with Brough's two shot attempts blocked away by the Miami defense.

In overtime, Harvard survived an early penalty corner by the RedHawks, with Harvard goalkeeper Ellie Shahbo making one of her three saves on the night just 1:43 into the extra frame.

Brough won it minutes later, as sophomore Emily Guckian corralled an insert by Kate Oliver and fired a low shot into the net to send the Harvard bench streaming onto the field.
