No. 15 Field Hockey Passes Road Test With 2-1 Victory at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – Senior captain Olivia Hoover and sophomore Siena Horton scored to help lead No. 15 Harvard field hockey (7-2, 2-0 Ivy) to a 2-1 win at Penn (1-8, 0-2 Ivy) on Friday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field. Harvard has now won six straight contests overall.

Harvard Highlights

Harvard got off to a strong start, scoring just over two minutes into the game after a period of sustained offensive pressure. First-year Kitty Chapple cut inside the top of the circle and fired a reverse stick shot that Hoover deflected past Penn goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert (seven saves) just 2:13 into the game to make it 1-0 Harvard.

Later on in the first quarter, first-year Marie Schaefers had a glorious chance from 10 yards away kicked out by Wollaert after a nice setup by Emily Guckian.

After a quiet second quarter in which neither team registered a shot on goal, Shahbo made her biggest save on the game early on the second half.

On a Penn penalty corner, Shahbo kicked away a shot from Gracyn Banks with her left pad extended to keep Harvard ahead 1-0 just over a minute into the third quarter.

Midway through the same frame, Horton capitalized on a ball that popped free from a scrum in front of the net, firing in a low shot past Wollaert at the 7:01 mark of the third quarter to give Harvard a two-goal lead.

Harvard withstood a late surge from Penn, as Shahbo sticked aside a penalty corner shot from Banks midway through the fourth quarter.

While the Quakers added a late goal with 3:25 to go, Harvard would hold off its Ivy rival to improve to 2-0 in league play.
