No. 12 Field Hockey Heads to Terrapin Invitational, To Face No. 3 Maryland, No. 23 American

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 12th ranked Harvard field hockey team (1-1) hits the road this weekend to take on two ranked squads in College Park, Md. Harvard will first play host No. 3 Maryland (4-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. on BTN+. The Crimson will then take on No. 23 American (2-2) on Sunday at 11 a.m. in a game that will also air on BTN+.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • In a homecoming for both head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden and assistant coach Madison Maguire, Harvard heads to Maryland for the Terrapin Invitational, which includes the Crimson, Maryland, American, and New Hampshire. Tjerk won five national championships in seven seasons on the coaching staff at Maryland (2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011), while Maguire a 2020 Maryland graduate and former team captain who was an All-American there in 2019.
  • Harvard is coming off a split weekend, as the Crimson won its home opener against No. 24 Miami University (W, 1-0, OT) last Friday before falling to No. 15 UConn (L, 2-0) on Sunday afternoon.
  • Against Miami, first-year Bronte-May Brough scored on a penalty corner with 4:06 remaining in the first overtime period to lift Harvard past the RedHawks. Harvard improved to 6-2 in its last eight games going to OT dating back to the start of the 2021 season.
  • Maryland has won all three meetings between the two teams, with the Crimson last taking on the Terps on Sept. 9, 2018. Maryland handed Harvard its lone regular season loss that year (L, 3-1), with Maguire, then a junior at Maryland, notching a goal and an assist in the game.
  • Harvard defeated American, 5-2, in the lone meeting between the two teams, on Sept. 8, 2018. Senior captain Kiley Allen, then a first-year, picked up her first collegiate point with an assist in that game.
  • Harvard is coming off its seventh appearance at the NCAA Tournament and sixth Ivy League title after finishing the 2021 season at 17-2 (7-0 Ivy).
  • Returning to play in 2021 after a missed season due to the pandemic, Harvard made the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in program history, matching a program record for wins on the year. Harvard also beat its highest ranked opponent ever, defeating No. 2 Michigan in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
  • In 2022, the Crimson welcomes back a talented roster, including eight of the 11 players that started in the team's NCAA Semifinal contest against Northwestern last season.
  • Seniors Kiley AllenOlivia Hoover, and Ellie Shahbo will captain the Crimson in 2022. All three captains were first-years in 2018, and have compiled a record of 47-8 in three seasons, including a 20-1 record in Ivy games, and a 23-2 mark in home contests.
  • NFHCA All-Americans Ellie Shahbo (second team) and Emily Guckian (third team) return for Harvard. Shahbo had an incredible season in net for Harvard in 2021, leading the nation in virtually every statistical goalkeeping category. A First Team All-Ivy Honoree, Shahbo had the nation's top goals-against average (0.44) and save percentage (.860) and added 10 shutouts. She finished the year with a record of 15-2. Guckian was one of Harvard's top two-way players, recording a goal and six assists and helping Harvard's defense become one of the top units in the nation. A native of Waybridge, England, Guckian was a NFHCA First Team All-Northeast Region selection and Second Team All-Ivy honoree.
