CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior forward
Sean Farrell scored a go-ahead power play goal early in the third period, and classmate
Alex Laferriere added three assists to help lead No. 9/9 Harvard men's ice hockey (11-4-1, 9-2-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 4-1 win over Clarkson (9-9-3, 3-4-2 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Jan. 13) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Making his first start in over two months, junior goaltender
Derek Mullahy made 25 saves to earn the win in net. Harvard outshot Clarkson 47-26 on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harvard was forced to rally from an early deficit, as Clarkson struck first on an early power play, as some quick passing led to a goal for Alex Campbell in front at the 6:05 mark.
The Golden Knights controlled the pace of play until late in the period, when the Crimson drew a power play on the second of two odd man rushes, when senior defenseman
Henry Thrun was tripped up on a 2-on-1 chance.
On the ensuing power play, Laferriere took control of a failed Clarkson clear, fed cross ice to sophomore forward
Matthew Coronato who found the open net to tie the game at 1-1 at 16:05.
Harvard carried the play to start the second period, eventually earning a power play opportunity at the midway point of the frame.
The Crimson peppered Clarkson goaltender Ethan Haider (43 saves) with shots but could not find the back of the net.
However, on a power play to start the third period, Farrell gave Harvard its first lead of the night. Senior forward
John Farinacci found Laferriere at the left circle, and he fed a pass cross-ice to Farrell for a one-timer into an open net at 1:30 of the third period to make it 2-1.
After Harvard killed off a Clarkson power play later in the frame, Gaffney potted his sixth goal of the year off a great faceoff play with under five minutes remaining in regulation.
Senior forward
Baker Shore sent a backhand pass right off the draw to Gaffney, who beat Haider between the pads at 15:30 to make it 3-1.
The Crimson sealed it with an empty net goal on a great individual effort by Laferriere to set up first-year forward
Joe Miller with 33.7 remaining to play.
