Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s Volleyball Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to McKendree

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team forced a fifth set, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling to McKendree, 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 25-22, 10-15), Saturday night in the final contest of the Harvard Invitational.

With the loss, the Crimson saw its record fall to 3-3 in what was its first five-set match this season. The Bearcats, meanwhile, improved to 3-2.

How It Happened

  • The Crimson opened the night by digging itself out of an early 11-6 hole to claim the first set, 25-20. Harvard used a 5-0 run to pull ahead, 15-13, and never trailed the rest of the way. A late 4-1 spurt by the Crimson put the set away for the hosts.
  • In the second frame, Harvard found itself tied with McKendree, 4-4, but the visitors moved in front, 10-5, and later, 14-6, en route to the 25-19 match-leveling decision.
  • Harvard took early control in the third set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead only to have McKendree tie the score at 7-7. The teams stayed within striking distance of each other, so much so the score was level at 22-22. The Bearcats, however, earned the final three points to move in front, 2-1.
  • The Crimson's resilience was on full display in the fourth set. Harvard trailed, 4-0, and eventually pulled even at 7-all. Despite it all, McKendree enjoyed a 15-11 lead and led by an 18-17 margin as the set moved to the late stages. Harvard then outscored the Bearcats, 8-4, the rest of the way to force a fifth-and-deciding set.
  • McKendree posted the first two points in the final stanza and immediately put Harvard on its heels. The deficit proved to be too much as the Crimson got as close as 3-2, but could not get over the hump, eventually falling by a 15-10 margin.

Harvard Highlights

  • The Crimson had three players reach the double-figure plateau in kills. Trevor Schultz led Harvard with a 12, Owen Fanning had a 11 and Ethan Smith recorded 10. All three finished with totals that were season bests.
  • Smith finished with a .750 hitting percentage, with Schultz not too far behind at .500.
  • Harvard had a balanced offensive attack as Kade McGovern chipped in with eight kills and Zach Berty finished with seven.
  • James Bardin, for the fourth straight game, set a season-high for assists. The sophomore had 33 at Purdue Fort Wayne, followed that with 37 vs. North Greenville and then finished with 43 vs. McKendree.
  • Logan Shepherd had a season-best 13 digs, which were two more than his last two games combined (8 at Purdue Fort Wayne, 3 vs. North Greenville).
