Men’s Soccer Scores Three Second-Half Goals to Rally Past Yale, 3-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – First-year Andreas Savva, junior Jan Riecke, and junior Alessandro Arlotti all scored goals in the second half as Harvard University men's soccer rallied to beat Yale University, 3-1, on Saturday night at Jordan Field, vaulting to the top of the Ivy League standings.
 
Facing a 1-0 deficit in the 61st minute, the Crimson (3-3-6, 2-0-2 Ivy) netted goals in the 63rd, 80th, and 90th minutes from Savva, Riecke, and Arlotti respectively to top the visiting Bulldogs (6-4-2, 1-1-2 Ivy) and remain unbeaten in Ivy League play.
 
The Crimson now stands alone at the top of the conference table with eight points with all eight teams having played four league games. Harvard improved to 8-1-5 in its last 14 Ivy League games.
 
Arlotti and Savva each posted a goal and an assist while Savva and Riecke each scored his first career goal. Arlotti scored his team-best fourth goal of the year as the Crimson wrapped a three-game homestand. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Alessandro Arlotti posted three points on one goal and one assist, increasing his team best totals in goals (four), assists (five), and points (13) for the season. For his career, he has totaled 18 goals, 19 assists, and 55 points.
  • Arlotti has now scored a goal in three of his last four games and in four of his last six outings. He posted three points for the third time this season and notched a goal and an assist for the second time in Ivy play this year.
  • First-year Andreas Savva registered his first collegiate points on his goal and assist.
  • Junior defender Jan Riecke scored his first collegiate goal, netting his first career game-winning goal. Riecke played all 90 minutes on the back line.
  • Junior Kristján Gunnarsson added his first assist of the season, providing a helper on Savva's equalizer.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Lucian Wood made four saves in the win.
  • Alongside Riecke, senior defender Nik White competed in all 90 minutes.
  • Harvard led 6-2 in corner kicks. In the second half, the Crimson held advantages in shots (10-8), shots on goal (5-3), and corners (6-2).
  • Harvard improved to 8-1-5 in its last 14 Ivy League games.
 

How It Happened

  • Neither side could break through in the first half with Wood making three saves in the opening 45 minutes for the Crimson.
  • Yale opened the scoring in the 61st minute behind a goal from Alex Umana.
  • The Crimson responded less than two minutes later as Savva found the back of the net for the first time in his career in the 63rd minute. After Gunnarsson made a run down the right side, Arlotti slid a pass across the face of the goal where an oncoming Savva knocked a shot into the net.
  • Harvard took its first lead in the contest in the 80th minute behind Riecke's first career goal. Savva played a corner kick to the near post where Riecke flicked the ball into the net.
  • Arlotti capped the scoring in the 90th minute. After the Crimson earned a free kick just outside the penalty area, Arlotti blasted a shot into the back of the net, converting a goal on a free kick for the second time in as many matches.
