BOSTON, Mass. - No. 11 Harvard field hockey (11-3, 5-0 Ivy) defeated Boston University thanks in part to a four-goal second quarter at New Balance Field on a rainy Tuesday evening. The Crimson scored a season-high seven goals and pitched its fourth consecutive shutout in a 7-0 win. The Crimson had goals from five different players as
Avery Donahue,
Sage Piekarski,
Maddie Mullaney,
Kitty Chapple, and
Lara Beekhuis all found the back of the net. Harvard was able to score four goals in two and a half minutes to help secure the big win for the Crimson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Much of the first five minutes was spent in the midfield until Harvard was awarded three consecutive corner attempts that the Terriers defense was able to fend off. Two of three attempts hit the net.
The Crimson was able to pin BU in their own end after generating its first attempt and after forcing another corner attempt
Avery Donahue finally found the back of the net to give Harvard the lead less than five minutes in. Donahue's strike was her second of the year.
Not even a minute later,
Kitty Chapple converted on a designed play off a corner attempt for her third goal of the season.
Emily Guckian took the insert and found Chapple who fired a rocket into the cage. Chapple has scored in back-to-back games with an assist from Guckian who has extended her point streak to 10 games.
The Crimson came out firing in the second quarter after first-year
Sage Piekarski scored two goals in thirty seconds. Piekarski who scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season capitalized on two chances in close to stretch the lead to 4-0 early in the second quarter.
A minute later
Lara Beekhuis fired an absolute rocket into the top corner to make it 5-0 Crimson. A minute after that Donahue found the back of the net after jumping on a loose ball for her second of the game and her first multi-goal game of the season.
Harvard ended up scoring four goals in two and a half minutes – the most explosive stretch for the offense all season while limiting the BU offense as the Terriers did not register a shot on goal in the first half
Coming out of the break, Harvard picked up where it left off after
Emily Guckian found
Avery Donahue who fired a pass to
Maddie Mullaney for a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal to stretch the lead to seven. Mullaney added her second goal of the season and has scored goals in back-to-back games.
