CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 11 field hockey claimed its seventh Ivy title after defeating Penn 2-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Berylson Field. With the win, Harvard has clinched at least a share of the Ivy title. For the second time in three years Harvard has won the Ivy Championship. Goals from
Sage Piekarski and senior
Mazarine Broze helped propel the Crimson to its championship-clinching victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson started quickly after a trio of great chances by
Kate Oliver,
Emily Guckian, and
Sage Piekarski early in the first quarter. Harvard generated three shots in the first four minutes of play.
Siena Horton jumped in the attack after forcing a Penn turnover at midfield and making a great move around the defender to have a great scoring chance. The junior fired a shot that was just put over the cage.
Two minutes later,
Lara Beekhuis made a quick move toward the slot and took a shot that was kicked out by Penn keeper Ruby de Frees. In the follow-up attempt, Beekhuis drew the first corner attempt for the Crimson.
Emily Guckian found
Kitty Chapple on the outside for a set play that was broken up by a diving Penn defender.
Four minutes into the second quarter,
Sage Piekarski got a stick on a
Kitty Chapple shot to give Harvard the first goal of the game and the lead. Piekarski has scored three goals in two games and now is tied for the team lead in goals with
Emily Guckian.
Lara Beekhuis appeared to score the second goal of the game for the Crimson after getting a piece of a shot from the right side of the cage. After review the goal was taken off the board after it was determined she did not get a piece of the shot. Beekhuis had two shots through three-quarters of play.
Sage Piekarski generated a great chance for Harvard in the fourth quarter. After keeping the play alive by chasing down and stopping a ball from crossing the end line she helped keep possession for the Crimson leading to two good looks from Guckian and Beekhuis.
From that possession, Harvard was awarded another corner attempt that helped pin the Quakers in their own end after a flurry of corner attempts.
Harvard was awarded four corner attempts in the fourth quarter and finally was able to convert after senior captain
Mazarine Broze scored her first of the season after hammering home a bouncing ball on the right side of the cage.
Emily Berlinghof had a breakaway with just under a minute left and with the Penn keeper coming out of her net she just missed the post.
Harvard has now shut out their opponents for 300 consecutive minutes.
