Women’s Heavyweight Rowing Opens 2023-24 at Head of the Charles Regatta

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Radcliffe Heavyweight Rowing opens its 2023-24 campaign this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta. The race weekend is the first of three this fall for the Black and White.

What to Know

  • Radcliffe will compete on the Charles River for the first time under first-year head coach Claire Ochal. The Friends of Radcliffe Rowing Head Coach for Women's Heavyweight Crew was tabbed to lead the program in July 2023, after a successful five-season stint at Syracuse.
  • The Black and White is scheduled to compete in four races over two days. On Saturday, Radcliffe will take the water for the Club Fours (1:04 p.m.), Club Eights (1:43 p.m.) and Championship Doubles (2:21 p.m.). On the final day of the event, the Black and White will compete in the Championship Eights (2:32 p.m.).
  • Last season, Radcliffe finished in second place in the Club Eights, fourth in the Club Fours, 10th in the Championship Eights, 12th in the Championship Doubles and 13th in the Championship Fours.
  • The 2023-24 squad will be led by senior team co-captains Sarah Averill and Heidi Jacobson. Averill, a Dedham native, was a CRCA Scholar Athlete and rowed in the varsity four boat a year ago. Jacobson, meanwhile, was also a CRCA Scholar Athlete in 2022-23 and was part of the second varsity eight crew.
