No. 17/18 Football Rally Falls Short at Princeton, 21-14

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 17/18 Harvard Football staged a second-half rally, tying the game at 14, but ultimately fell, 21-14, Saturday afternoon at Princeton. The Crimson's first loss of the season dropped it to 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Ivy League. The Tigers, meanwhile, moved to 3-3 (2-1 Ivy).

How It Happened

  • The Tigers got on the board first, turning an interception into seven points. On Princeton's second play of its possession, Jiggie Carr rushed up the middle for 34 yards and the touchdown with 3:52 left in the first quarter.
  • Harvard's offense struggled to get going in the first half, but the defense held its own, especially in the second quarter. The unit, however, could not put up a zero as it allowed a Tigers 8-yard TD pass from Blake Stenstrom to AJ Barber, putting the hosts ahead, 14-0, with 36 seconds left. Princeton eventually took that 14-0 lead into the locker room.
  • The Crimson dented the scoreboard late in the third quarter with a 4th-and-5 pass from Charles DePrima to Kaedyn Odermann that covered 29 yards, keeping alive its drive and putting the ball at the Tigers 11. Three plays later, DePrima and Odermann connected once more, this time for a 12-yard TD reception. The scoring play cut its deficit to 14-7 heading into the fourth period.
  • Harvard kept its momentum going once the fourth quarter resumed, forcing a Princeton punt. The Crimson then went on a 10-play drive that covered 38 yards in 4:53, and ended with a game-tying 1-yard rushing TD from Shane McLaughlin (4th, 9:40).
  • Both teams punted on their next possessions, which gave Princeton with the ball with 3:20 to go. The Tigers converted a 3rd-and-9 and were later faced with a 3rd-and-5. On the latter third-down play, Stenstrom found Connor Hulstein for the 10-yard go-ahead TD.
  • With Harvard facing a 21-14 deficit and with 1:21 left in regulation, DePrima rushed for three yards, but was sacked on second down. On 3rd-and-16, Princeton picked off a DePrima pass intended for Tyler Neville to thwart any Crimson comeback and secure the decision.

Harvard Highlights

  • Kaedyn Odermann caught his first touchdown of the season and the fourth of his career. The wideout led the Crimson with 57 yards receiving on a season-best four receptions. Odermann entered the contest with four catches in 2023.
  • Shane McLaughlin, after missing the Howard game, recorded his fourth rushing TD of 2023, and finished with a game-high 65 yards on the ground.
  • Garrett Sharp and Thor Griffith each had a team-high eight tackles. Sharp had a game-high-tying five solo stops and Griffith added a game-high 1.5 tackles for loss.
