PHILADELPHIA – Junior
Alessandro Arlotti scored his team-high fifth goal of the season, but Harvard University men's soccer fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Penn Park.
In a game televised nationally on ESPNU, the Crimson (4-4-6, 2-1-2 Ivy) pulled within 2-1 in the 66
th minute behind Arlotti's goal but could not rally after the Quakers (5-3-5, 2-1-2 Ivy) netted a pair of goals in the first half in the 11
th and 34
th minutes.
The Crimson remained tied for first in the Ivy League standings with eight points thus far in conference play.
Harvard Highlights
- Junior Alessandro Arlotti scored his team-best fifth goal of the season and increased his team-leading point total to 15 points on the year. He has scored goals in three of his last four games. In conference play alone, he has posted four goals and 10 points in 2023. For his career, he now has 19 goals and 57 points.
- Arlotti led the match in shots (three) and shots on goal (three).
- Senior Ale Gutierrez tallied his second assist of the season and fourth assist of his career.
- Among Harvard's field players, junior Jan Riecke played the full 90 minutes. He has competed in 1,243 of a possible 1,260 minutes on the season.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Lucian Wood made four saves in the match. He tallied four or more saves for the seventh time this year.
- For the match, Harvard held a 13-9 advantage in shots while the two teams stood tied in shots on goal (7-7) and corner kicks (4-4). In the second half, the Crimson gained advantages in shots (8-5) and shots on goal (6-3).
How It Happened
- In the 11th minute, Penn opened the game's scoring as Charlie Gaffney sent a cross into the box where Michael Hewes headed the ball into the goal.
- The Quakers went up 2-0 in the 34th minute behind a goal from Stas Korzeniowski who received a pass in transition from Aaron Messer.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Lucian Wood made a key save in the 46th minute to keep Harvard within striking distance.
- Harvard pressured Penn to open the second half as junior Alessandro Arlotti drove a shot on target in the 48th minute and nearly converted a free kick from 30 yards in the 50th minute. Senior Ale Gutierrez followed shortly thereafter with a header that required the Quakers' defense to clear the ball off the line.
- The Crimson cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 66th minute on Arlotti's goal. Quality passing from junior Marko Isakovic and first-year Andreas Savva led to the ball ending up at the feet of senior Kaoru Fujiwara on the right side. Fujiwara then played a ball across the face of goal that Gutierrez played along to Arlotti who persevered to knock the ball into the back of the net.
- In the 72nd minute, Wood made a point-blank save to keep the Crimson within one.
- Harvard almost equalized in the 89th minute as a header from sophomore Nicholas Nyquist off a corner kick from Savva needed a diving save.
