CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's ice hockey (0-7-1, 0-7-1 ECAC) gave No. 7 Cornell a fight at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center tonight, battling the Big Red in an eventual loss.
Kaley MacDonald scored her first career goal in the matchup to power the Crimson offense while
Daisy Boynton made 16 saves, allowing just one goal in two periods, to backstop the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard and Cornell met on the ice at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Friday night for the first time this season.
- Alex Pellicci made seven saves to hold off Cornell in the first seven minutes of the game. The Big Red managed to strike first, netting its first goal of the night midway through the period.
- Harvard put eight shots on net in the first period but were held off by the Cornell keeper. The Big Red added two more goals in the period to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Ellie Bayard recorded two shots on goal in the frame and Pellicci cleaned up 15 shots on the backend going into the first intermission.
- The Crimson came out of the intermission with energy, working the puck into the Cornell zone and creating two early chances from Bayard and Sophie Ensley. Both sides buckled down on defense for the first half of the period, as the sides combined for just eight shots on net in the first ten minutes of the second period.
- Cornell added another tally 11 minutes into the second frame to take a 4-0 lead.
- Harvard skaters put four more shots on target in the period but came up empty. The Big Red put one more mark on the scoreboard, taking a 5-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
- Daisy Boynton cleaned up all 11 shots she saw in the third period to end the game strong between the pipes.
- The Crimson got its goal midway through the third period off a one-timer from first-year Kaley MacDonald. MacDonald teed off on a puck dished to her by Mia Biotti, threading a shot into the top right corner of the net.
- Harvard would have two more good looks on net, but the score would hold at 5-1 at the final buzzer.
