MEN’S ICE HOCKEY TAKES FIFTH CONSECUTIVE GAME OVER RIVAL CORNELL

Crimson win against nationally ranked rival Cornell, 3-2.

ITHACA, N.Y. –  No. 20 men's ice hockey defeated No. 7 Cornell tonight by a score of 3-2. Harvard's first ranked win of the season comes over the Big Red after Joe Miller and Alex Gaffney both found the back of the net for the Crimson. Harvard was able to kill off a 5 on 3 penalty in the third to help secure a big win over its Ivy rival.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Joe Miller wasted no time  with an immediate goal within the first minute, silencing the energetic home crowd. This was Miller's third of the season. He was assisted by Philip Tresca

Cornell responded late in the first period with a goal of its own, yet the Crimson quickly responded on a power play with a goal from Alex Gaffney, assisted by Ryan Healey. Gaffney's power play marker was his first of the season.

The second period was a stalemate. Neither team could find the back of the net. Derek Mullahy had seven saves in the period and 27 on the night.

The third period started with a Cornell goal two minutes into the period from Jake Kraft. Not long after the Big Red evened the score, Alex Gaffney added his second goal of the night on another power play. Gaffney crashed the net and was able to just get it by Ian Shane for his first multi-goal game since last season against RPI. He was assisted by first-year Ben MacDonald. Cornell reviewed the play yet the goal call stood.

The Crimson found itself in penalty trouble after multiple slashing calls resulting in a massive 5 on 3 opportunity for the Big Red. Mullahy and the nationally ranked PK stood tall and were able to kill off both penalties.

The Crimson held on to beat its nationally ranked Ivy rival 3-2 in a wild atmosphere from Lynah Rink.
