CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 20 men's ice hockey ( 1-2-3, 1-1-3 ECAC) fell to No. 11 UMass in a high-scoring affair on Friday evening. The Crimson had a power-play late in the third period but was unable to tie the game at six with time expiring. The Crimson had goals from
Ryan Healey,
Alex Gaffney,
Ryan Fine, and
Cam Johnson who scored his first career goal.
Aku Koskenvuo set another career high with 43 saves – breaking his previous career high he set against the Princeton Tigers earlier this season. Harvard is back in action on Sunday against Boston College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson came out firing after
Ryan Fine picked up a pass from behind the net and scored the game's first goal just over two minutes in.
Michael Callow and
Ryan Drkulec worked the puck down low before the first-year stuffed it in for an early lead. Fine now has two points in his last three games.
Ryan Healey wasted no time adding another for Harvard after firing a shot through traffic on the power play. Healey's first of the year had the Crimson off and running and a two-goal lead not even five minutes into the game.
Ben MacDonald went to the box for head contact shortly after the Healey power play strike. The Crimson, who has not had to defend a 5:00-minute penalty this season were able to kill It off thanks to stellar goaltending and a trio of huge blocks from
Christian Jimenez and
Ian Moore.
UMass scored its first of the game late in the first period on another power play attempt. Coming out of the first intermission, the Minutemen scored again to tie the game at two just 1:35 into the middle frame.
Ryan Healey answered right back for Harvard after going end to end and finishing a beautiful move to give Harvard a 3-2 lead. Healey's second goal of the game was the first multi-goal effort of his career.
UMass scored another goal right after the highlight reel effort from
Ryan Healey to tie the game at three.
The Crimson responded with two goals in the next ten minutes after tallies from
Alex Gaffney and
Cam Johnson gave Harvard its second two-goal lead of the evening.
Alex Gaffney finished a quick passing play on the man advantage for his third goal in the last two games. First-year
Cam Johnson then added his first career goal after forcing a turnover off the forecheck and just squeezing the puck by the Minutemen netminder.
UMass scored less than a minute later to cut the lead to one. In the third period, the Minutemen added two more goals which stood to be enough despite a late push from Harvard.
