No. 1 Seed Field Hockey Tops No. 4 Seed Penn in Ivy Tournament Semifinals, 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – First-year Lara Beekhuis scored a goal in the third quarter as No. 1 seed Harvard field hockey topped No. 4 seed Penn, 1-0, in the semifinals of the inaugural Ivy League Tournament on Friday afternoon at Berylson Field.

After earning the right to host the four-team tournament following an undefeated regular season in Ivy League play (7-0), the No. 9 nationally ranked Crimson (14-3) extended its winning streak to nine straight games with the victory over the Quakers (7-10).

Beekhuis put the Crimson in front with her goal at the 38:11 mark, booking the hosts' spot in the tournament's title game on Sunday.

Harvard will meet No. 3 seed Princeton in the championship game of the Ivy League Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+) after the Tigers topped No. 2 seed Cornell, 1-0, in the first semifinal. The Crimson beat the Tigers during the regular season, 4-0, on Oct. 14.

Harvard Highlights

  • First-year Lara Beekhuis scored her seventh goal of the season and now has 16 points on the year. She has scored four goals in her last four games.
  • Sophomore Kitty Chapple posted her fourth assist of the year and has notched assists in back-to-back games. She tallied a game-high four shots.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Tessa Shahbo made two saves and tallied her fifth shutout of the season. As a team, Harvard registered its eighth shutout of the year, including its sixth shutout in its last seven games.
  • For the game, Harvard led in shots (11-3), shots on goal (3-2), and corners (7-1).
  • Harvard extended its winning streak to nine games.
  • The Crimson improved to 8-1 at home in 2023 and to 23-2 at home since the start of the 2021 season.
  • Since October 6, Harvard has outscored its opponents 20-1 and has posted shutouts in six of those seven contests.
  • Harvard beat Penn for the second time this season after the Crimson topped the Quakers, 2-1, on Oct. 21 in Cambridge.

How It Happened

  • In the first quarter, the Crimson held edges in shots (1-0) and corners (1-0) as the two teams began postseason play.
  • Harvard increased its pressure on Penn in the second quarter, gaining edges in shots (6-0), shots on goal (1-0) and corners (5-0) in the frame. That increased threat included three corners and two shots from the 22:57 to the 23:17 marks.
  • At halftime, Harvard led in shots (7-0), shots on goal (1-0), and corners (6-0).
  • The Crimson broke through in the third quarter at the 38:11 mark as first-year Lara Beekhuis scored from in front of the goal after sophomore Kitty Chapple sent a pass across the face of goal from the left side.
  • Harvard maintained advantages in shots (10-2), shots on goal (2-1), and corners (7-1) through three quarters.
  • The Crimson kept the Quakers off the board in the fourth quarter to complete the shutout.

Harvard will meet No. 3 seed Princeton in the championship game of the Ivy League Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
