Crimson Fencers Post Strong Results At National and International Competitions

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – Harvard fencers competed on American and German soil this weekend, taking part in the USA Fencing December North American Cup and the Junior Women's Epee World Cup. At the December North American Cup in Richmond, Va., five Crimson fencers placed in the top-10 in their respective disciplines.
 
First-year Isabella Chin was the lone Harvard fencer at the Junior Women's Epee World Cup in Laupheim, Germany, placing 65th among 202 registered fencers at the competition.
 
Harvard alum Elizabeth Tartakovsky '23 opened the December NAC by taking home a gold medal in the women's saber. The Livingston, N.J. native defeated former Princeton fencer Maia Chamberlain in the final round of women's saber action. Sophomores Zoe Kim and Chloe Williams each placed in the top-25 of the women's saber table at the December NAC, as Kim ranked sixth and Williams 24th.
 
Day one action of the December NAC also saw Harvard first-year Daniel Zhang earn sixth place honors in the men's foil. Team captain James Chen took 20th place in the competition.
 
Junior Lauren Scruggs returned to NAC action strong, earning bronze medal honors in the women's foil in Richmond. Team captain Annora Lee placed 88th.
 
All four men's saber fencers on the Harvard roster competed in Richmond, with first-year Kevin Sohn placed 49th, while fellow first-years Hyunseok Choi and Prash Subbiah ranked 68th and 75th respectively. Sophomore Matthew Linsky placed 89th at the December NAC.
 
Sophomore Faith Park was Harvard's only women's epee representative at the December NAC. The Lorton, Va. Native placed 19th in her home state.
 
Of the four men's epee Harvard men's epee fencers at the December NAC, three placed in the top-50 out of 237 competitors. Senior Jonas Hansen impressed with a fifth place finish, as first-year Owen Jin placed 33rd. Junior Mihir Kumashi took 45th and first-year Henry Lawson placed 59th.
 
Harvard fencing returns to collegiate action next month, taking part in the St. John's Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20.
