PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Sophomore second baseman
George Cooper tallied three RBIs, and four Crimson batters posted multi-hit games, but Harvard University baseball fell to the University of Pittsburgh, 12-10, on Friday afternoon at Centennial Park in its season opener.
Beginning competition at the Snowbird Baseball Classic, the Crimson (0-1) took early leads of 5-2 and 6-3 through three innings and rallied to re-gain a 10-8 edge with four runs over the seventh and eighth frames before the Panthers (2-2) hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth.

- Senior left-handed pitcher Tim Williamson threw 4.0 innings in relief, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
How It Happened
- Harvard opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Berger drove in the Crimson's first run of 2023 with a single down the right field line.
- After Pitt scored two runs in the bottom of the first, Harvard responded with four runs in the top of the second to move ahead 5-2. A ground ball from Rounds and a ball put in play from Jacobsen catalyzed the frame's scoring.
- Still leading 5-3 entering the third inning, the Crimson took a 6-3 advantage off a sacrifice fly from Cooper.
- The Panthers scored the game's next five runs, claiming an 8-6 edge with two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
- Harvard answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to pull ahead 9-6. A double down the left field line from Baldwin brought in the stanza's first run prior to a two-run single up the middle from Cooper.
- The Crimson extended its margin to 10-8 in the top of the eighth behind an RBI double down the right field line from Jacobsen.
- Pitt took the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth off a grand slam from Noah Martinez.
