ANN ARBOR, MI – In their sixth ranked matchup of the season, No. 18 Harvard Men's Tennis dropped the hard-fought battle against No. 4 Michigan, 4-3.
The Crimson began the day hot by grabbing the doubles point off wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Harvard and Michigan split the first two matches with
Harris Walker and
Alan Yim grabbing a victory in their first match together this season. The fifth win of the year for
Steven Sun and
Ronan Jachuck secured the doubles point for the Crimson.
Moving into singles, the Wolverines powered ahead claiming victory in the first three matches completed.
Valdemar Pape brought the Crimson closer with his 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 position.
Shortly after, Michigan clinched the victory with a win at the No. 5 position with one match outstanding.
Harris Walker was able to grab one more victory for the Crimson and bring the final tally to 4-3 by defeating No. 16 nationally ranked Ondrej Styler (Michigan).
Andrew Rueb '95, The Scott Mead '77 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Tennis, The James Herscot '58 Coach of Excellence touched on the weekend saying, "this was a great weekend of tennis. Beating northwestern, a top 25 team, on the road, with one of our star players out with an injury is an amazing feat. So proud of this team and how they keep stepping up to the challenge." Rueb continued, discussing the fight the Crimson showed against a top-5 Michigan team, "we got valuable contributions from our first years in Valdemar and Marc over the weekend.
Alan Yim stepped into the doubles lineup at the last minute and really made a big difference today against Michigan. We fell just short against the Wolverines but gave them all they could handle and then some."
Harvard Highlights
- Steven Sun and Ronan Jachuck have dominated so far this season as a doubles pairing. The duo is nearly perfect at the No. 2 and 3 positions with a record of 5-1.
- Valdemar Pape picked up his second singles win of the season, going 2-0 this weekend.
- Harris Walker picked up his fourth singles win of the season by defeating No. 16 Ondrej Styler (Michigan)
- With the win, the Wolverines increase their lead in the all-time series over the Crimson to 7-1.
