CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior forward
Alex Laferriere scored a pair of goals, and senior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson made 34 saves in net as No. 5/6 Harvard men's ice hockey (23-6-2) defeated Princeton (13-19-0), 6-1, to win its ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series against the Tigers.
Harvard moves on to ECAC Hockey Championship weekend in Lake Placid, NY for the seventh time in the last seven completed seasons, and will take on Cornell next Friday (March 17) at Herb Brooks Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harvard jumped out to an early lead for the second consecutive night on a great passing play. First-year forward
Marek Hejduk found senior forward
Baker Shore in the slot from the left wing. Shore fed cross ice to Drkulec to found an open net at 2:13 of the first period.
Later in the period, Harvard made it a 2-0 lead, as Laferriere scored for the second straight night. On a rush up ice, senior forward
John Farinacci followed his own rebound behind the net, then found Laferriere wide open in front for a goal at 16:49 of the frame.
Austin Wong was sent off for a major penalty for hitting from behind moments later at 17:38. But Harvard killed off the major early in the second period, and the Crimson scored twice in a span of two minutes later on in the frame to take control.
At 14:47, sophomore forward
Zakary Karpa deflected a shot from
Ryan Siedem past Porter to make it 3-0 Harvard.
Then, Laferriere scored his second of the night off a great pass from first-year forward
Joe Miller at 16:47 to make it 4-0.
Shore added shorthanded empty net goal midway through the third period at 10:18, and first-year forward
Philip Tresca added Harvard's sixth goal of the night off a great set up from Farrell (two assists) at 12:37.
Princeton's Matt Hayami broke up Gibson's shutout bid with 1:42 remaining, but that did not dampen the celebration for the Crimson, which finished the season 13-1-0 at Bright-Landry Hockey Center this season.
