Payne Racks Up 4 Hits in Harvard's 12-6 Win at Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PA. -- The Harvard Crimson (10-7-1, 3-0 Ivy) got their third win at Penn to finish the opening weekend of conference play 3-0 as they got past the Pennsylvania Quakers (0-19, 0-3 Ivy) 12-6 on Sunday.

How it Happened

The Crimson put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning.

The Crimson then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Quakers cut it to 3-1. The Harvard offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Trina Hoang and a two-run double from Madi Mays, which brought the Crimson lead to 9-1.

Harvard held Pennsylvania without a run before expanding their lead to 10-1 the following inning.

The Quakers gained ground, closing the gap to 10-4 until Harvard added some insurance in the sixth. First-year Finley Payne and sophomore Savannah Fitzpatrick each scored a run for the Crimson in the inning, bringing the Harvard advantage to 12-4. Pennsylvania put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Crimson still coasted to the 12-6 win.

Game Highlights

• First-year Riley Flynn got the win for Harvard. The right-hander went four innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.
• Payne had a double and an RBI for the Crimson. Mays put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Hoang also helped out for Harvard, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding three RBI.
• Flynn struck out five Quakers hitters.
• Harvard's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed six runs across.
• The Crimson out-hit the Quakers at a 13-10 clip.
• Harvard went 5-for-16 (.313) with runners in scoring position.
• Harvard pitchers limited Pennsylvania to just 2-for-11 (.182) with runners in scoring position.
• Harvard pitchers faced 34 Pennsylvania hitters in the game, allowing four ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out eight.

The Crimson will play their first games on home soil as they play host to the Big Red of Cornell next weekend, with a doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 followed by a single game on Sunday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m. The games will be streamed on ESPN+.
