Men’s Squash Sends Seven to CSA Individual Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – This weekend at the 2023 CSA National Collegiate Individual Championships, No. 1 Harvard Men's Squash will be represented by seven players throughout the five divisions.  Play will open up tomorrow, Friday March 3, and run through Sunday, March 5.  With wins, Crimson players would advance to the quarterfinals matches set for the tomorrow afternoon.

Pool Trophy

Comprised of the top 16 players from the 2022-23 season, Harvard will send three players to compete for the Pool Trophy.

Following his season where he racked up 13 wins while only dropping three matches playing primarily at the No. 3 position for the Crimson, Ido Burstein earned his spot as the 16th seed in the A Division.  Burstein closed out his junior campaign with the Crimson on a high, winning his last six matches, including going 3-0 at the CSA Team Championships to help lift Harvard to their fourth straight National Championship.  As the 16th seed, Burstein will face off against top-seeded Aly Hussein (Virginia) at 12:00 p.m. in the round of 16.

George Crowne will also compete for an Individual National Championship following his dominant senior campaign.  The co-captain was a strong leader on and off the court for the Crimson this year, finishing the season tied for the most wins by any player on the squad.  With a remarkable record of 15-2, Crowne primarily played at the No. 2 spot for the Crimson.  Earning the 11th seed, Crowne will take on 6th seeded Nathan Tze Bing Kueh (Penn) in an Ivy League battle at 1:35 p.m.

Finally, Marwan Tarek enters the Pool Trophy draw as the 2nd seed following a commanding final campaign with the Crimson, in which he finished 14-1, playing all 15 matches at the top of Harvard's ladder.  Tarek is no stranger to the CSA Individual Championships as he was a quarterfinalist last season and won the Pool Trophy in his sophomore year.  Tarek will begin his quest of another individual title against Maxwell Orr (Yale at 1:35 p.m.

Molloy Cup North Division

Tate Harms will be the sole representative for Harvard in the North Division of the Molloy Cup.  The sophomore has had a dominant second season with the Crimson, finishing tied for the highest number of wins in the season with a record of 15-2.  Harms has proven his resilience throughout the season whether it be through domination of opponents or come from behind victories in must win matches.  Harms sits as the two seed and will open his weekend tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. against Jordan Sprecher (Franklin & Marshall).

Molloy Cup East Division

In the East Division of the Molloy Cup, David Costales will get his first taste of the CSA Individual Championships as the 6th seed.  Costales had a strong first year with the Crimson, finishing with a record of 12-4 while competing primarily at the No. 6 position.  The first-year will begin his push for the East Division title tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. against Juan Hernandez (Denison).

Molloy Cup South Division

First-year Denis Gilevskiy will represent Harvard as the 3rd seed in the South Division of the Molloy Cup.  Gilevskiy has had a strong first campaign with the Crimson having collecting 14 wins while only dropped one throughout the 2022-23 season.  Playing primarily at the No. 5 position, Gilevskiy is coming off a dominant showing at the CSA Team Nationals.  Going 3-0 and being the only player for either team to not drop a game in the championship match against Trinity, Gilevskiy played a key role in getting the Crimson their fourth straight National Championship.  Gilevskiy will take on Neal Malani (Amherst) at 10:30 p.m.

Molloy Cup West Division

Finally, Neel Joshi will compete for Harvard at the 9th seed in the Molloy Cup West Division.  Joshi is an impressive, 13-3 this season while playing primarily at the No. 7 position for the Crimson.  Last weekend, Joshi competed in all three matches of the CSA Team Championships, including grabbing the fifth win and clinching the victory for Harvard over Cornell in the opening round.  Joshi will begin his weekend facing off against Benedek Takacs (Trinity).
