Baseball Defeats Holy Cross in Home Opener, 6-5

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Crimson relievers combined to allow just one run over 6.2 innings, and senior Hunter Baldwin and first-year Gio Colasante each drove in two runs as Harvard University baseball beat Holy Cross, 6-5, in its home opener at O'Donnell Field on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Crimson (5-15) scored five of the game's final six runs to rally past the Crusaders (7-18) after initially facing a 4-1 deficit in the middle of the third.
 
Junior left-hander Uday Narottam picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Harvard. He went 2.0 shutout innings, while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out one. Senior left-hander Harrison Stovern earned the save, tossing a scoreless ninth, registering a strikeout and inducing the game-ending double play.
 
Offensively, Colasante went 2-for-2 on the day with a walk and two RBIs while Baldwin finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.

How It Happened

  • Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, Rounds came across to score following a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a double.
  • The Crusaders then scored three runs to retake an advantage at 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third.
  • The Crimson responded with a run in the last of the third as Harvard scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Colasante, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Crusaders.
  • Harvard kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard before rallying to tie it up at 4-4 in the fifth. The Crimson scored two runs when a single from Baldwin scored sophomore George Cooper and Bravo.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Messervy crossed home plate on a wild pitch for the lone run of the inning for the Crimson, bringing the Harvard advantage to 5-4.
  • The Crimson again built on its lead in the seventh, extending the lead to 6-4 as Colasante sent a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Bravo.
  • After Holy Cross scored once in the eighth to pull within 6-5, Stovern came on to close the game getting a strikeout before inducing the game-ending, 6-4-3 double play.
