CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Men's Volleyball challenged third-ranked Penn State, but ultimately fell in three sets, 16-25, 15-25, 23-25, Friday night in front of a packed crowd at Malkin Athletic Center.
How it Happened
- The Crimson (7-12; 0-5 EIVA) was slow out of the gates, falling behind quickly, 3-0, and eventually, 8-2. Harvard never got closer than five points, cutting its deficit to 10-5, before dropping the first set, 25-16.
- Harvard notched the first point of the second frame and proved that it was more than ready to compete, going point-for-point with the Nittany Lions. Penn State (19-3; 5-0 EIVA) jumped out to a pair of two-point leads only to have the Crimson knot the score. Harvard trailed again by two, this time by an 11-9 margin, and closed to within one. The visitors answered with three straight points to take a 14-10 lead and the cushion was all it needed en route to a 25-15 decision.
- Penn State continued its momentum to begin the third set, notching the first three points. Harvard, however, leveled the score at 6-6, with the teams finding themselves knotted several more times down the stretch (10, 11, 12, 13). During that run to 13 points, the Crimson itself enjoyed leads on three different occasions, but could not create enough separation to put away the Nittany Lions. After it was tied at 13, PSU posted three unanswered points and was able to maintain a lead despite Harvard getting to within one 18-17. The Crimson found itself trailing, 23-22 and 24-23, but could not get over the hump in what ended in a 25-23 defeat.
