Sailing Set for Two Road Regattas

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing will continue on with their spring slate this weekend as they travel to the Dellenbaugh Trophy and the Marchiando Trophy on Saturday, April 1 through Sunday, April 2.  The two regattas will be hosted in Providence, RI by Brown University and Cambridge, Mass. by MIT, respectively.

Forecast

Dellenbaugh Trophy – Providence, RI
Intense conditions are expected in Providence, RI for both racing days this weekend.  Beginning with rain in the forecast Saturday, temperatures will be at the highest they've been all season, reaching the high 50's.  Strong winds of 10-17 knots are expected, with intense gusts reaching as high as 35 knots out of the northeast.  Things are expected to calm down slightly on Sunday with winds not climbing over 13 knots and gusts ranging from 21-27 knots.  Temperatures are expected to remain in the 40's during the racing day, not exceeding 47 degrees. 
 
Marchiando Trophy – Cambridge, Mass.
Very similar conditions to Providence, RI are expected in Cambridge, Mass.

What to Know

  • Last weekend Harvard added a pair of top-three finishes to their resume at two of their three regattas.  The Crimson finished third out of nine squads at the Friis Trophy Team Race and second out of 10 schools at the Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race.
  • Through the first four weekends, the Crimson have been dominant on the water, finishing in the top-four at eight of their nine regattas. 
  • In the most recent ICSA Rankings for Open and Women's Sailing saw Harvard ranked No. 3 in Open Sailing and No. 4 in Women's Sailing.

At the Helm

Michael O'Connor is entering his 26th season as the head coach for the Harvard Sailing program.  Under O'Connor, the Crimson have won national team race championships in both 2002 and 2003.  Additionally, they won the national coed championship and women's national title in 2003 and 2005, respectively.  Last year, O'Connor led his team back to the ICSA Team Race National Championship and the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championship.

Next Up

The Crimson will compete in a single regattas next weekend as they battle in the NEISA Open Team Race Championship, hosted by Brown University, on Saturday, April 8 through Sunday, April 9.
