CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team withstood an LIU rally in the fourth set to defeat the Sharks, 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22), Saturday evening at Malkin Athletic Center. With the win, the Crimson swept its homestand and improved to 6-8 overall, while LIU fell to 7-7.
How it Happened
- Harvard, which trailed 6-1 early, turned its fortunes around when it scored five straight points to move in front, 15-14. The Sharks tied the score at 16, but the Crimson responded by closing the set on a 9-3 run to pocket the 25-19 win.
- The second set was a see-saw affair as no team led by more than two points until Harvard took a 23-20 lead. The Crimson was on the verge of clinching the match, holding a 24-21 advantage, but the Sharks posted consecutive points to get within one. Owen Fanning, however, put the set away with a kill, giving Harvard the 25-23 decision.
- The Crimson suffered a tough third set, falling behind, 9-4, and never recovered en route to the 25-16 loss.
- In the fourth, with Ryan Hong serving, Harvard scored three straight points, including two on aces, helping the hosts get out in front, 4-2. Then with James Bardin serving, Harvard turned a 7-all score into an 11-7 advantage. The Sharks, however, stormed back later with eight consecutive points to take an 18-16 lead. Harvard gathered itself and leveled the score at 19, 20, 21 and 22 before closing out the set with block at the net, securing the frame, 25-22.
Harvard Highlights
- Zach Berty posted his fourth straight match with at least 10 kills, finishing with 15 on 27 swings (.444).
- Ethan Smith matched a season-high with 10 kills and ended with a hitting percentage of .474. He also added a pair of services aces and a team-high six blocks.
- Trevor Schultz led Harvard with three aces, while contributing five kills, three blocks and a pair of digs.
- James Bardin racked up 37 assists and was responsible for a team-high eight digs. Logan Shepherd finished one shy in the dig category with seven.
- The Crimson picked up its first win over LIU in series history. Harvard entered the match with an 0-3 record vs. the Sharks.
